L.A. Art Exchange, Santa Monica

An exhibition of more than thirty-five recently completed paintings representing several leading aboriginal art communities in Central Australia.

'the world's last great art movement' Robert Hughes

At 7:00 P.M. on Friday March 12th, 2004, the Honorable John Olsen, Consul General of Australia, will offer opening remarks at an exhibition of more than thirty-five recently completed paintings representing several leading aboriginal art communities in Central Australia. The exhibition site is L.A. Art Exchange, 2451 Broadway (between Cloverfield and 26th Street) in Santa Monica. Phone 310-828-6866 or 310-822-3417.

Among the well-established and emerging artists to be exhibited are the following:

Barney Campbell Tjakamara and Walala Tjapaltjarri (Kintore); Michael Nelson Jakamara, Long Jack Tjakamara and William Sandy (Papunya); Barbara Weir, Dolly Mills, Georgina Jones Petyarre, Rosie Pula, Minnie Pwerle, Patsy Long and Kathleen Kemarre (Utopia); Judy Watson, Rosie Fleming and the Granites Family (Yuendumu); Maureen Hudson and Cassidy Possum (Mt. Allan). Recent paintings by many leading Aboriginal artists will also be on display and for sale. One painting will also be given away at a drawing.

The exhibition is co-curated by Vicki Salisbury of Walkabout Gallery, www.walkabout.com.au (Sydney) and Ron Gottesman of aboriginality.com, an online gallery. Walkabout is affiliated with World Vision Indigenous Programs, which sponsors and supports development, health, leadership, education, advocacy and other community projects across Australia.

Illustrated talk with Kerry Smallwood: Saturday, March 20, 2pm

Reservations recommended for both events

Refreshments provided by the Australian Consul of Los Angeles. A didjeriduet will perform.

AND

On Saturday, March 20th at 2:00 pm Kerry Smallwood, curator of the Kelton Foundation Collection of Aboriginal Art, will give an illustrated talk on ³Contemporary Central Desert Art and the Development of the Art Movement² at the L.A. Art Exchange.

Reservations recommended for both events. Valet parking for opening.
