comunicato stampa

The first major German solo exhibition of the French artist Jean-Luc Moulène (born 1955) marks the start of the Kunstverein Hannover’s 2015 program under its new director Kathleen Rahn.

Jean-Luc Moulène’s works are founded on a varied artistic analysis of life based on the aesthetics of commodities and the reproduction tendencies of their respective times. His early works include photographs depicting everyday products in a prototypically objective manner. Moulène’s photo series document in retrospect temporally determined alterations of forms taken from everyday life as a result of changing production conditions, but which simultaneously also reveal an observation of the world as seen from the perspective of an attentive flâneur. The exhibition also features drawings and objects evidencing an intense occupation with the formal possibilities of contemporary art, exploring the conduct of form—up to the mutation.

While Moulène has already had major international solo shows, for example in 2005 at the Jeu de Paume in Paris and in 2011 at Dia:Beacon, the reception of his work in Germany has been limited until now, being represented for example in numerous group shows with his photographic series “Objets de grève” (Strike Objects). The series focuses on specific products manufactured by striking workers. A change in the appearance of these goods called attention to workers’ demands. Moulène’s contribution to documenta X (1997) can be comprehended as a subtle but wide-ranging intervention: The artist supplied diverse photographs at that time, which were exhibited on billboards and in daily newspapers, the media that—before the flood of digital images—dominated everyday life.

The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Académie France à Rome—Villa Medici (exhibition May 2015).
