Frischespores&Molekules

Sparwasser HQ, Berlin

The exhibition-event expresses the urbanite's experience with sound, music and image in the city. A mix of the three produces a set of sensations that can be extremely banal or deeply touching, but of course, either or is not the issue at hand here...

Somewhere between the digital and the analogue, there exists this space where you're not quite sure where to place a sound. These sounds are somewhat familiar and comforting, sometimes popular, somewhat avant-garde but there is no denial here: you would have liked to keep the track and listen to it on a rare occasion.

The exhibition-event FRISCHESPORES&MOLEKULES expresses the urbanite's experience with sound, music and image in the city. A mix of the three produces a set of sensations that can be extremely banal or deeply touching, but of course, either or is not the issue at hand here...

There has been much debate over the past few years whether music is related to the visual arts: for us, it is not a crucial question if relations between the 2 exist, but rather if they could be formulated and explored through the act of utilizing sound and music as material.

The artists presented in this exhibition come from different environments involving different sonic qualities: George Chua and Chee Wai Yuen live and work in Singapore, Daniel Kluge is based in Munich, Tom Spikke works between London and Masse, while Egill Saebjörnsson shuffles between Reykavik and Berlin.

Daniel Kluge presents "pictopussy", an interactive video band where the audience can trigger their own combination of musicians and create their own music. The source material consists of recordings of musicians from a variety of places around the world, each of them either singing, speaking, or playing an instrument of their choice. The sounds relate to such worlds as pop, folk, glitch, techno, and contemporary music. This results in a performance at The Hamburger Bahnhof that combines vocal and instrumental fragments from anywhere and everywhere, found videosounds and field filming mixed with their own rendering of acoustic instruments. The band is made up of : Bernd Ulbrich(bass), Edouard Stork(synthesizer.,guitar, violin), Stephan Schüttler (drums), Daniel Kluge(guitar, vocals.,video) und Christian Ganzer(video).

"299.57" presented by Tom Spikke is somewhat charmingly analogue: he set his iTunes collection to randomize and recorded the tracks on an extended LP4 mini disc. He will be presenting this mini disc sample along with a graphic poster of information on the songs that his personal home computer has selected on fine evening.

George Chua and C.W. Yuen for the duration of a week will inhabit the basement of Sparwasser HQ, utilising the space as their sound laboratory. Their performance methods involves their close collaboration in the generation of sounds that are both mechanic and alive. In Singapore, Chua and Yuen have performed extensively both in their own acts, as well as collaborating with theatre companies like Theatreworks and Practice Performing Arts. The utilization of both digital equipment and analogue devices layer upon each other and creates a sonic quality that is physical and compiling. This act of displacement from Singapore for both Chua and Yuen is an important factor: that they now have a connection to the city of Berlin via this performance.

Egill Saebjörnsson has been living in Berlin for the past 6 years. In the year 2000 he released his second album (first was self released in 1999) on the Icelandic label BadTaste (Sugarcubes, Bjork, Sigurros, Mum, Minus) and on the London based label SomeBizarre (Soft Cell, Marc Almond, Einstuerzende Neubeuten, The The).Following the release of Tonk of the lawn in the year 2000 his videos got quite good playrate both on MTV Europe and on VIVA particularly because of their originality and sence of humour. Charlotte at Fast Forward VIVA named him the king of Iceland and played his videos a number of times in his show. Never the less Egill has been standing aside the music business and kept within the art field and has chosen to operate from there instead of seeing himself as a musician. In FRISCHESPORES&MOLEKULES, he will present 3 music videos, 2 of which are from his albums and 1 new video that will be a considerable fresh and experimental approach to how music videos can be made.
