Oliver Zwink's works map the geographical landscape of the city and its
architecture. Through both his sculptures, drawings and photographs, he explores
the utopian ideal, the city, and its decay. Yet this decay does not imply
destruction for him, but rather alteration and metamorphosis.
A hanging tower, suspended from the ceiling, will occupy the main gallery space.
The tower, fabricated entirely from cardboard and coloured paper, at first
glance bears strong relations to modernist architecture, yet the process of
destruction that Zwink uses, attacking the exterior, undermines this. Parts of
the plain exterior are torn and ripped away to offer a glimpse into the vibrant
interior of the structure; to reveal its inner mechanics. In Zwink's drawings
the city is transformed into an organic form fused with the landscape: tower
blocks sit beside fictional buildings that bear no relation to architectural
reality, but which have a strong correlation to the organic forms found in
objects in nature. The labyrinth of the cityscape turns the city into a parallel
with the human body. Zwink will also be showing a series of photographs, taken
of a model city. The city construction, made out of cardboard, has been
destroyed and corroded by the artist, forcing it to collapse and reshape itself,
yet the impression of the original is still present, both through its ghost and
in the imagination. In these photographs, the artist creates a tension between
the fabricated and the real, capturing the changing light across this fictitious
landscape, the inner core of the city. The model itself exists as a permanent
work stage, constantly altered by Zwink, undergoing change and transformations
similar to that of a real city, change that is documented and captured solely
through the photographs.
Oliver Zwink has exhibited widely internationally. Solo exhibitions include
Zora, The Showroom, London; EAM, Kassel, Germany and Grow, Galerie Station im
Mousonturm, Frankfurt. Group exhibitions include Art Gallery of New South Wales,
