'The Sacred + The Profane'. For the exhibition the artist presents her new series of paintings, through a series of mixed media experiments.
Pg Art Gallery is proud to present the solo show titled ‘The Sacred + The Profane’ of Elsa Ers that runs from January 21st through February 25th.
In her new series of paintings, through a series of mixed media experiments, Elsa Ers aims to give form to her personal musings on themes such as displacement, belonging and cultural identity. By borrowing and repeating certain elements from her own cultural heritage, along with components from global contemporary culture, she creates a visual language, highlighting women’s deepest intrinsic qualities of gathering and creating a home. Adopting the patterns of the Turkish kilims as a symbol of the protective cocoon for female identity, and weaving them with vintage photographs and imagery collected from estate sales and illustrations from vintage science books, the artist reconstructs the duality that is evident in the 21st century, especially in the female psyche; a longing for the past juxtaposed with a quest for the new.
The exhibition titled ‘The Sacred + The Profane’ is a series of mixed media paintings that additionally give voice to the artist’s personal collection of anonymous vintage photographs, which she’s been accumulating since her graduation in 2005. The artist weaves stories for the forgotten faces of the past, taking them out their sacred anonymity, and placing them into a mundane, imperfect world, thus giving them a story again, and a home.
