Material Art Fair 2015

Auditorio Blackberry, Mexico City

Material Art Fair will celebrate its highly anticipated second edition from February 5 to 8, in a brand-new venue—the Auditorio Blackberry in Mexico City's leafy and fashionable Condesa neighborhood, walking distance from some of the city's best restaurants as well as the beautiful Parque México.

Material is Mexico City's first and only contemporary art fair focused on emerging practices. Maintaining the same intimate size as its first edition, the fair will feature a notably more international group of 40 galleries and artist-run exhibition spaces, the majority of which will be making their first appearances in Mexico. First-timers include Shane Campbell Gallery (Chicago), François Ghebaly Gallery (Los Angeles), Mary Mary (Glasgow), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Fourteen30 Contemporary (Portland), Carne Gallery (Bogotá), LOYAL (Stockholm), and The White Lodge (Cordoba).

Returning galleries include Clifton Benevento (New York City), Lulu (Mexico City), Michael Jon Gallery (Miami/Detroit), Queer Thoughts (New York), lodos (Mexico City), Carrie Secrist Gallery (Chicago), Cooper Cole (Toronto), David Petersen Gallery (Minneapolis), and Green Gallery (Milwaukee), among many others.

There will also be a special Material Exhibitors Club presented by the NYC art world hotspot, Beverly's, featuring a group exhibition and complimentary mezcal, provided by Gracias a Dios for the fair's exhibitors.

The selection of Material's stellar lineup was a challenge left in the very capable hands of its 2015 selection committee, comprised of Chris Sharp, independent curator and co-founder of Lulu, Mexico City; Beatriz Lopez, co-director of Instituto de Visión, Bogotá; John Riepenhoff, co-owner of Green Gallery, Milwaukee; and Gerardo Contreras, independent curator and director of Preteen Gallery.

Material's 2015 Public Program will feature daily roundtable discussions organized by the New York City-based publication Triple Canopy, under the title "How Far is Near"; as well as a video program, "Sand in the Vaseline," organized by London-based curator Anna Gritz and featuring works by Adriana Lara, Sophia Al Maria, and Stuart Middleton.

Mexico City-based Distrito Editorial will present the fair's bookstore, featuring a selection of artist books, books about art, and editioned works.

Material VIPs will enjoy the fair's AXA VIP Lounge with a view of the fair from above and a program that includes tours of the city's most exciting artist-run spaces as well as guided tours of the fair and, of course, parties.

Conference program
"How Far is Near," organized by Triple Canopy
New York-based online publication Triple Canopy, has organized a series of conversations, including a number of collaborators who live in Mexico City, that considers the ways in which political representation might be achieved—or recognized as a chimera, or disavowed—through the work of representing politics. In doing so the series will examine the affordances of new and old media; the relationship between the ways in which art and literature circulate and attain meaning; and the various responses by Mexican artists and writers to social and political crises in recent months and decades.

Video program
"Sand in the Vaseline," curated by Anna Gritz
"Sand in the Vaseline" presents three artists' film programs by Adriana Lara, Sophia Al Maria, and Stuart Middleton. The program borrows its title from the legendary work by Ed Ruscha, later appropriated by Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen. It looks at the banalities that continue to disturb the well-oiled flow of modern living despite the radical changes in the way that life is being lived and work is being made. Consciously confusing form and utility, the programme sheds lights on the hiccups in customization that bring us right back to the fragile tissue of human life and the social constructs it builds
