'Wish you were here'
Sam Jedig signals 30 years in the service of art with his first actual solo
exhibition in Copenhagen. It will take place at the exhibition space
'North', Nørregade 7c, in the period from April 1st to April 30th 2004. The
opening is Thursday, April 1st from 5 to 8 pm.
The exhibition is titled 'Wish you were here', and symbolises a journey into
the mystery of the human body. The show includes a video montage as well as
works on paper.
The video montage 'The Twin Sisters' functions as the focal point of the
exhibition. The montage shows a series of collages that put humans together
as if they were a great mystery of the universe, or a humourous experiment
in the world of art.
We follow the two main characters, the 'twin sisters', on a long journey
from the fetal state to their birth. They are strange, erotic creatures,
always looking for the perfect body. They are as seductive and titillating
as advertisements, but at other times also grotesque and demonic, created by
a mysterious universe where nothing is the way it usually is. The figures
struggle to create themselves and use tricks so as to be seen and loved.
They borrow fragments from the recognizable world: fashion pictures,
children's paper dolls, images from the world of art, while other grotesque
creatures watch them, and they play a game that we seem to recognize. We
live in a world where the control of the body is an important criterion of
success, and, whether we want it or not, we are all drawn to this exterior.
Sam Jedig's works ask relevant questions about how we see ourselves, the
world around us, and how it is presented to us through mass culture. He does
this by altering the images of the world as we know it, by putting these
images together in an unexpected way. Sam Jedig's basic thesis is that 'the
real world' is only as real as we want it to be, and that, right below the
surface of this world, there is a multitude of other worlds that are just as
real.
Since the beginning of the 1980's, Sam Jedig has worked with art, but,
parallel to his work as a creative artist, he has also worked as a curator
through Stalke Gallery and Stalke Out of Space. These activities are still a
great source of inspiration for his art.
