In her most recent collection of works Banu Birecikligil takes in hand the weight of being a woman in contemporary society peering at it through the context of mythology. These characters bare the full weight of existence anxiety in their dark and hopeless environments, this plight which transends time, past current and future.
Kassandra - from whom the exhibit draws it name has said to have been embued with the gift to see the future. Yet Kassandra spurned the advances of Apollon the benefactor of this power and hence was cursed by him, so that no one would ever believe Kassandra's visions again. This seer is no longer believed or trusted. Forced to suffer these visions of truth she is crushed by the weight and becomes a hysteric, lunatic, tormented soul.
As in the case of Kassandra, from the very beginning of recorded history, women who have had to fight for the most basic human rights such as freedom of speech and expression have been labelled as damaged, broken, crazy and suffered as outcasts from society. Thus, women have been forced to deny their femininity, to reject anything else outside of the five common senses, to loose touch of intuition, their natural connection to nature, to ignore their inherent wisdom and have fallen prey to this unhealthy culture where having more masculine attributes has become if not the norm at the very least a positive attribute.
