comunicato stampa

The Italian artist Fabrizio PLESSI's oeuvre stands out like an erratic block among the artists of arte povera and the much younger transavanguardia. For decades Plessi has invoked historicity and mythology through his work. Themes of fire and water evoke the presence of the eternity of space and time, initially in reality and then more forcefully represented by technical elements. Electronic bodies of water, flickering flames, flowing time and towering narratives manifest in his extensive video sculptures, for which he has gone down in history as their founder.

PLESSI's works constantly stand at the intersection of reality and appearance, fact and fiction, arte povera and media art, archaic and high tech.

In our exhibition „LIQUID LABYRINTHS“ PLESSI presents three new, funnel-shaped video sculptures made of corten steel together with a suite of small format drawings, which document the genesis of these sculptures, and, for the first time, painting: 13 massive, large-scale canvases – which to date have only been shown in the Ludwig Museum in Budapest and Koblenz – reeled off with the brutal dramatics of an archaic silent film.

PLESSI writes of his new sculptures:
„Three structures of rusted iron. Three water cisterns, like magical wells of a ritual practice. Three water ciruits, in which stones fall in irregular distances from the sky, like a light rain in an endless summer night.
The deep and far away sound increases, an unexpected water concert from falling stars.
The full and intense violet of some of Cézanne's shadows, surrounded by the scent of nineteenth century French painting.
But this time the lavender blue interchanges and blends, amalgamates with the wells and the impertinent video-blue, sinking into the electronic and digital reality of our time.“

Fabrizio PLESSI, born 1940 in Reggio Emilia, lives and works in Venice and Mallorca. He has spent his artistic life working on the development of the virtual imagination borne by electronic technology and is considered to be the creator of video sculpture, thereby developing new, groundbreaking paths for contemporary art. PLESSI is one of the pioneers of an artistic practice, without which present day art would be unimaginable.
PLESSI taught from 1990 to 2000 at the The Academy of Media Arts in Cologne where he held the chair for „Humanization of Technology“.
Among the extensive score of exhibitions in well-known museums on all continents, his participation in Documenta 8 and the Venice Biennials 1970, 1972, 1984, 1986, 2005 and 2011 stand out. His work will also be presented at the upcoming Venice Biennial 2015 as well as at the EXPO in Milan.
