Peter Gould: North Natomas

Kagan Martos Gallery, New York

The Kagan Martos Gallery is proud to announce the opening of its fall season 2000 with an exhibition of Peter Gould.

For his first solo show in New York, Gould creates an installation which typifies his ongoing interest with our absurdly manicured natural and urban environment. He recreates such cultivated spaces as strip malls, business parks, off-ramps, and well-groomed bedroom communities, examining the influence that suburban planning and corporate landscaping has on our view of nature. The creation of an artificial oasis amid these neutered spaces only accentuates the artifice from which they were inspired. Built from such unnatural building materials as Formica, particleboard, Astroturf, and brick, Gould's flat, bright green, tailored gardens are more akin to neat architectural models, or curious stage props, than the naturalistic bushes, shrubs and lawns they may aspire to be. In addition to showing two installations, entitled "North Natomas" and "The Virginian", this exhibition also includes a series of black and white photographs mounted on formica titled "Famous Restaurants". These documentary - type images are a clear source for the installations, and cast an ironic distance on these vernacular settings.

Peter Gould received his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. His work has been widely shown in group shows in New York, including; White Columns and P.S. 122. His work is currently featured in the Whitney at the Philip Morris exhibition, "Pastoral Pop!" through December 2000, and the Socrates Sculpture Park. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
