Stories from the Back Porch, Pomona

SCA Gallery announces two exhibitions addressing female desire and pleasure.

Receptions: Saturday, April 10, 2004, 6-9 pm, AND Saturday, May 8, 2004, 6-9pm
Docent Tours for The Big O: Saturday, May 8, 8pm, and Sunday, May 16, 2pm

PLEASUREWORK: This exhibition explores female desire through the work of 14 female artists from around the nation: Rebecca Blankley, Jennifer Burkley, Sheri Crider, Cheryl Dietz, Wendy Flory, Elizabeth Hunt, Loretta Loman, Danielle Rae Miller, Kimiko Miyoshi, Mayumi Nishida, Laura Ratcliffe, Mary van Riper, Phyllis Stapler, Shari Wasson.

Curators Cheryl Dietz and Laura Ratcliffe write:
“We believe desire can be seen as an active emotional process that excites creativity and change. However, as curators we are not looking to define but to explore; this exhibition of works will create its own visual anthology of desire. Some questions that come to mind are: Is there a language of desire? Is desire a construct? What is meant by female desire? What might it look like? The necessity of the project is betrayed in the difficulty of answering these questions.”

This exhibit was realized in its first incarnation in the Spring of 2003 in a small alternative space in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. Artists were asked to address the concept of desire in any way that they liked. For this current manifestation of Pleasurework, many of the artists have created new works or have added to or re-defined their original concept. This exhibition provided a unique opportunity to re-conceptualize a complicated subject.

THE BIG O: STORIES FROM THE BACK PORCH, POMONA. Presented for the first time by Marie Cartier and MORGASM (Museum of Radical Gender and Sex Matrix).

This exhibition involves ethnography as installation and features highlights from MORGASM’s permanent collection--stories and artifacts from the site of female orgasm. Marie Cartier is a visual and performing artist, curator, and writer. She was a participant in the Envisioning the Future project in Pomona, facilitated by Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman.
