This exhibition presents paintings, sculpture and film, and even extends to the facade of the building. Exploring the possibilities of painting and sculpture, Opie works in a serial manner, boldly testing his new ideas in exhibitions.
The works of Julian Opie, known for their graphic visual idiom, are among the most recognisable in contemporary art. This major exhibition of his work at Kunsthalle Helsinki features paintings, sculpture and film, and even extends to the façade of the building.
Black contours, strong fields of colour, simple, reduced expression; always some element of surprise to make an everyday motif exciting. The aesthetic of Julian Opie – who has created his own minimal, artistic vocabulary – draws upon street signage and urban visual language, as well as borrowing motifs and mediums from the traditions of art history. In his hands, they find new and surprising forms: a bust grows to a height of two metres, a portrait winks, and a human figure is brought to life through the most sparing of details.
Exploring the possibilities of painting and sculpture, Opie works in a serial manner, boldly testing his new ideas in exhibitions. The selection at Kunsthalle Helsinki contains some forty pieces, many of which were made specifically for the occasion; they include paintings, mosaic portraits, LCD films and large 3D-modelled sculptures. LED animations will also be installed on the exterior wall of Kunsthalle facing Aurorankatu street, and works from Opie’s well-known series of people walking on the adjacent façade, facing Nervanderinkatu street.
