Slapstick, farce, suppressed desires, fears and tragedy – all these are found in John Bock’s original world of absurd, morbid humour. A world he creates out of cheap everyday products such as wiring, aluminium foil, cardboard and shaving cream...

UN-EX-SURROGAT is John Bock’s title for this exhibition – entirely in keeping with the language he has created out of ‘nonsense words’ – impossible to translate, and perhaps only comprehensible to himself – a game he invites us to play with him.

John Bock regards himself as a sculptor, but he has challenged and expanded the concept; he does not want to ‘create sculptures only to abandon them in a white cube’. His sculptures are made to interact with people.

This prompted John Bock at an early stage in his career to embark on his 'suitcase lectures’. Packing his bags with sculptures made of inexpensive everyday articles, he visited exhibitions and art events and used them in his performances. Nowadays, Bock designs larger spaces, which he fills with objects and sculptures, and uses actors who are given scripts in his own idiosyncratic art language.

John Bock produced the film and installation Three Sisters especially for Kulturhuset Stadsteatern. It portrays an emotional journey, in which three sisters process (and revenge) the untimely death of a young daughter.

John Bock (b. 1965) lives in Berlin and has had solo exhibitions at several galleries, including the ICA and the Barbican in London, REDCAT in Los Angeles, the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, P.S.1 and MoMA in New York. He was featured at documenta 11 (2002) and in Kassel and the Venice Biennale (1999, 2005 and 2013), and participated in the group exhibition I’m Still Here at Magasin 3 (2014).
