This new exhibition explores subjects of decay and mortality. The internationally renowned artists featured create contemporary re-workings of the 'memento mori', which is a 17th century theme reminding viewers of their own mortality.
Death is a very abstract and conceptual notion, depicting it has been a challenge for many artists. This exhibition therefore focuses on a range of interpretations expressed using a variety of techniques. Dust to Dust includes the film Decasia by Bill Morrison (also screened at the Lakeside Theatre), Anya Gallaccio (2003 Turner Prize nominee), Laura Letinsky, Lisa Temple-Cox, Simon Temblett and Greville Worthington. These works are visually striking and the underlying concepts challenge the viewer. They question modern society's obsession with physical perfection and its desire for invincibility and immortality. St Jerome with a skull sets the scene, placing the contemporary works within an historical framework, illustrating how the subject of mortality has been dealt with in the past.
A programme of accompanying events and talks will run along-side the exhibition. Visit Dust to Dust and spend 21 irreplaceable minutes to celebrate your precious life.
