Paul Kruger: Roots
July 24-August 16, 2015

Paul Kruger works with naturally fallen trees and reclaimed wood, turning them back into tree-like and seemingly impossible formations. In his series titled "Fallen", Kruger uses what he calls "the wooden waterfall" technique to bend and transform this seemingly tenacious material. This is a narrative of looking devastation in the eye and reaching for the strength to start over and believe in the impossible.

About the Artist:
Paul Kruger was born in 1980 and raised in New York City. As a child, he would play along the Hudson River, making swords and walking sticks out of the washed-up driftwood. He studied at the specialized fine art high school LaGuardia, The Arts Students League, and later earned his BFA at The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in lower Manhattan.

In 2008, he began to revisit the path along the Hudson River, now seeing seas of industrial man-made NYC driftwood left for waste. He became enthralled with the possibilities of where the pieces came from, what they were in their passed lives, and what he could transform them into. He began recycling the driftwood into sculptures. As he fine-tuned his craft, in 2012, he took on bigger projects, using wood from fallen trees across the nation. He paired the natural wood with industrial steel bases and created the design company "Fallen Industry" furniture made from fallen trees. His work has been featured on NY1 News, Daily News, Crain's Business and NY Magazine to name a few.

the artist Red: Touching in the Underground
July 24 - August 1, 2015

The artist Red focuses on creating art through pyrography (wood burning). She feels that her art comes to life in a more organic way when she burns it as opposed to painting it. Red hopes to move what is traditionally considered a craft into the realm of fine art by not limiting the images she burns. Inspired by her background in film, she strives to have an allegorical feel in each of her works. She hopes the viewer derives as much pleasure in viewing and imagining these stories in the artwork as much as she enjoys creating it.
