GALLERY 1: Annegien van Doorn, In Passing
C&H art space proudly presents the solo exhibition of Annegien van Doorn,
Looking at the work of Annegien van Doorn, it is easy to notice her special way of facing daily life: she is constantly looking for encounters with everyday objects that are undoubtedly present in everyone’s routine, but they are normally just used and forgotten, as almost unnoticeable things.
However, through Annegien’s photographic and video work we recognize how, with simple gestures, she provides them with a second connotation and function. She gives an attractive and unusual appearance to these ordinary objects, making us aware of their actual existence. This way of looking at and paying attention to the most common things is what brings to Annegien’s practice the characteristic of ‘life-art’; she is not only a keen observer of life behind the objects that we usually ignore, but by using her camera, she reflects on the origin of each product. This process takes into account their provenance and the way they get to us, the final consumers, managing to add a special value to them.
Every object is made by someone and for a specific purpose, but after the artist’s intervention, we have the possibility to contemplate them from an unusual perspective; the scenes become playful representations of this particular reality; a joy for the eye which now looks at them with the curiosity of an explorer.
Van Doorn works mainly with photography and video, but before taking her shots or capturing anything, she goes through a thoughtful process in which she connects with the objects that will be present in the artwork. Annegien is somehow a sculptor, too; she takes found materials and studies them, tries to discover the way they work, and then compounds different structures with which she plays and approaches new forms. After an intimate dialogue with the objects she reaches a composition with an unclear function; sometimes it will be used as a mere tool for the shot, and in other occasions they become part of the installation itself. In this way, she generates a dialogue between the pieces that acquire a completely different meaning from the original one.
Her work is not just peculiar, but vibrant; we can recognize ourselves in it, passing through our routine without paying attention to what on the contrary, she seems to be fascinated with. She achieves to show the soul of every little object surrounding us and at the same time creates visual poems that awake the interest of the spectator.
Annegien van Doorn (b. 1982, Vlissingen, NL) graduated in photography from St. Joost Art Academy, Breda, in 2004, and from the Master of Fine Art program Artistic Productions and Investigation from Barcelona University in 2008. Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at MONA Detroit, FOAM Amsterdam, Espacio F and Espacio Menosuno, Madrid, Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo, Ca L’arenas Museo de Mataró, and DeFKa, Assen. She has also participated in a number of group shows, among others, Hotel MariaKapel Hoorn, Duende Rotterdam, Sala d’Arte Jove Barcelona, Biennial de Valls, Torch Gallery Amsterdam, and Three Shadows Photography Arts Center in Beijing.

GALLERY 2: Fashion & Object
With: Jan Dirk van der Burg, Maurice van Es, Egon Van Herreweghe and Qiu Yang.
Curated by: Jedithja de Groot
Invited by the Amsterdam gallery C&H art space, curator Jedithja de Groot presents Fashion&Object. This exhibition derives from her interest for the visual arts, photography, and fashion. Where do these three fields meet besides fashion photography, still life fashion photography, and fashion design? This thought was the start for her search of photographic work by visual artists from various disciplines that is tangent to the world of fashion and advertising. Fashion&Object shows the work of JAN DIRK VAN DER BURG, MAURICE VAN ES, EGON VAN HERREWEGHE, QIU YANG, and CINDY BAKKER in the project room. The exhibition is on view from September 5 until October 10.
Jan Dirk van der Burg (1978) is a filmmaker and photographer. Calvin Klein, The dyslectic collection arose from his fascination for the sale of counterfeit products of Western brands in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Van der Burg collected a series of dyslectic Calvin Klein underwear in bazaars and markets from all over the world. He portrayed these fake underpants based on the well-known advertising campaign and gathered the series in a book. Fashion&Object is the first time that Van der Burg presents his series as photo prints.
Maurice van Es (1984) closely photographs objects, people, and houses. He zooms in on the details that are hidden behind the stories he captures. It’s his personal perspective that he tries to capture in image. His interest in time and transience can be felt in every work. From his versatile, young oeuvre, Fashion&Object shows a number of intimate pictures of objects and clothing.
The work of Egon Van Herreweghe (1985) arises from photos, clippings, and objects that he collects and investigates by manipulating and reproducing them. The recapturing of an existing image doesn’t lead to a weak copy or an echo of the original, but is a creative activity. Van Herreweghe interprets the reproducible image as a bearer of culture. As a thief, he operates in the creases of the image and thereby breaks through the existing visual order.
Qiu Yang (1981, Beijing) is a Chinese photographer that lives and works in Amsterdam. In 2007, shortly after obtaining his BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Yang established his eponymous studio and began working in commercial and self-initiated projects. His images have been featured in art and fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, art exhibitions, and film. His editorial and commercial commissions include AnOther Man Magazine, Christian Dior, The Gentlewoman, Hermés, Kenzo, Liberty London, Nowness.com, Vogue US, and Wallpaper Magazine, to name a few.

PROJECT ROOM: Cindy Bakker
Curated by: Jedithja de Groot
In the project room, Fashion&Object presents a selection of different works by Cindy Bakker (1989). From her education in lifestyle and design, she approaches the object in her photos in itself. She analyzes, studies, and dissects – sometimes literally – objects in their form or context, and captures them in bright colors and clear contrast, in a way that is simultaneously recording and inquisitive.
About the curator:
Jedithja de Groot is a curator with a large interest in visual art, photography, and fashion. Earlier she was the gallerist of Galerie 37 Spaarnestad in Haarlem (2007-2012). Besides that, she works for Spaarnestad Photo and sells photo prints from the collection Spaarnestad / Nationaal Archief on her own website, jedithjadegroot.nl. She also initiated projects that involve the collection Spaarnestad and invites visual artists to make new work in response to this historical photo archive.
