comunicato stampa

Goethe-Institut Hongkong and Austrian Consulate General jointly present the photo exhibition “Travels in No-Man’s Land” (“Reisen im Niemandsland”) by Austrian photographer Kurt Kaindl from September 15 to October 10, 2015 at the Goethe-Gallery. The exhibition shows black and white photos that Kaindl took along the former “Iron Curtain”, the border between East and West from Lübeck in Germany to Trieste in Italy. A discussion on “Truth is where the border lies: Personal memories and experience before and after the Fall of the Iron Curtain” will take place on the opening day of the exhibition from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in the Institut’s Black Box Studio. Moderated by Vivienne Chow, the discussion will be conducted in English. Admission is free but registration is required at kultur@hongkong.goethe.org.

The year of 1989 saw the fall of the “Iron Curtain”. Kurt Kaindl's photos trace the borderline that ran through Europe, from Lübeck in Germany to Triest in Italy. The project, which began in 2008 and has been in progress until the present time, was initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs. The photographs were taken during several travels along the former “Iron Curtain” between July 2008 and March 2009. The project is also documented in the photo book titled “Reisen im Niemandsland” (Travels in No-Man’s Land) with texts by Karl-Markus Gauß and Clemens Berger, available for browsing at the exhibition in the Goethe-Gallery.

The photographer approaches the theme from 'both sides' – from both East and West, distilling the unique atmosphere into photographic artworks: the expansive landscape that was once dedicated No-man's Land, the remaining, sometimes abandoned housing estates, and most of all the people who either still, or once again live along these former borders.

His classic black and white photographs are accompanied by captions detailing the background stories of his subjects, and so creating a connection between past and present.

To give Hong Kong visitors a clearer orientation of the former “Iron Curtain”, an additional map outlining the historical border with places where Kaindl took the photographs is produced by students of City University of Hong Kong. Visitors to the exhibition will find themselves stepping into the historical locations once entered into the Goethe-Gallery.

Kurt Kaindl, born 1954 in Gmunden, Austria, is a photographer, editor and curator. He lives and works in Salzburg and Berlin.
