The Curitiba International Biennial celebrates its 22nd anniversary in 2015 by
putting art on the streets. Events are not restricted to museums, galleries and
cultural centers, but occupy urban space. The Biennial is curated by the art critic
Teixeira Coelho and will take place in the capital of the Brazilian State of Paraná
between 3 October and 6 December a nd will exhibit works by artists from five
continents at more than one hundred locations in the city.
The theme of this edition of the Biennial is World Light, a theme that brings
together works that represent the best of international contemporary art. “The 2015
edition of the Curitiba International Biennial addresses the art of light: art made
with or about light,’ Teixeira Coelho remarks. The event coincides with UNESCO’s
International Year of Light in the field of science and technology.
Guest curators include Leonor Amarante, Tereza de Arruda, Fernando Ribeiro, Bo
Nilsson and Yamil Le Parc. The winners of the 2015 Young Curators Prize, Ana Rocha
and Goura Nataraj, work with guest curator Daniel Rangel. Vera Miraglia and Carmen

The Biennial will be present in the principal museums, cultural centers, galleries
and other art spaces of the city of Curitiba, including the Oscar Niemeyer Museum
(MON), the FIEP System Cultural Center, the Municipal Museum of Art (MuMA), the
Curitiba Metropolitan Cathedral, the BRDE Cultural Space—Palacete dos Leões—the
Antony McCall Pavilion, the UFPR Museum of Art (MusA), the Paraná Museum, the APAP
Gallery, the Print Museum, the Museum of Photography, the Curitiba Memorial, the
Guido Viaro Museum, the Paraná Museum of Contemporary Art and Pátio Batel, among
others.
This year, the organizing committee decided to pay homage to the FrancoArgentinean
artist Julio Le Parc, a contemporary artist who was one of the pioneers of kinetic
art. Founder of the GRAV collective in the 1960s, Le Parc’s work consists primarily
of reliefs made of light and movement, fluorescent liquid and other materials.
“Dazzling is the adjective that best describes our reaction to his work”, Teixeira
Coelho avers. Julio Le Parc’s impressive work will be exhibited in the Paraná
capital for the first time. “The public will be surprised by the quality of the
works and the artists in the Biennial. Iconic internationally renowned names and
awardwinning emerging artists will feature in the various spaces: figures such as
Anthony McCall (USA), Carlo Bernardini (Italy), Dan Flavin (USA), Eliane Prolik
(Brazil), Iván Navarro (Chile), Jeong Moon Choi (South Korea), Odires Milászho
(Brazil) and Xul Solar (Argentina)”, Luciana Casagrande Pereira, president of the
Biennial, notes.
In this edition, urban art and artistic performances receive special attention.
Apart from their increasingly importance in the international art world, these media
furnish direct and immediate contact with the community. Were that not enough, the
works in the street also help to provide a more lasting legacy that extends beyond
the exhibition program.
“The Biennial provides an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with the most
contemporary of art. Looking at the works, attending the performances or visiting a
museum enables people to transcend geographical boundaries and expand their cultural
repertoire. Once again, the Biennial will involve the whole city, stimulating people
in a different way”, Luiz Ernesto Meyer Pereira, director general of the Biennial
asserts.

Education
The Education Action Project seeks to prolong and realize the full potential of the
effects of the Biennial in the public education network. The aim is to create a
network that spreads knowledge by way of talks, roundtable discussions and guided
tours. Educational material will be published and made available for download on the
Biennial site, thereby having an impact on teachers, students and the community at
large. All school libraries in Paraná will receive this publication.
History
The first edition of the Curitiba International Biennial was staged in 1993, when it
was still called VentoSul, with artists from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. In
1995, artists from Chile and Uruguay were added. The 1997 edition was a travelling
exhibition with works on show at cultural centers such as the Assis Chateaubriand
São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and the Recoleta Cultural Center (Buenos Aires).
In 2007, the show adopted the theme of works related to “Contemporary Narratives”
and covered the whole of Latin America. In 2009, it brought together artists from
five continents under the overarching theme of “Great Water: Altered Maps”, with
artists such as Bruce Nauman, Gary Hill and Marina Abramovic. In 2011, the name was
changed to Curitiba Biennial and the city was transformed into a vast contemporary
art space, with a special role for an education project aiming to democratize the
visual arts. In 2013, the C uritiba International Biennial commemorated its 20th
anniversary and consolidated itself as one of the m ost important events on the
world circuit. Important international contemporary artists, such as South Africa’s
William Kentridge, China’s Ai Weiwei, France’s Louise Bourgeois, Austria’s Peter
Kubelka and Germany’s Heinz Mack featured in the show. Artists resident in cities in
Paraná and other Brazilian states also gained great visibility during the event.
Circuits
In an effort to expand and strengthen its local ties, the Biennial is supporting
five circuits. The Museums Circuits will include shows organized by institutions and
enter into dialogue with the concept of the Biennial. The Galleries Circuit is a
special program involving the city’s main contemporary art galleries. The Studios
Circuit will bring the public into contact with the production of local artists in
their own workplace.
The Curitiba International Biennial’s University Circuit —CUBIC, promotes debate and
reflection and exhibits the work of student artists. The Biennial awards a prize for
the best work in this circuit, which, this year, will be an residency at the Cité
Internationale Universitaire de Paris.
The Curitiba International Biennial Film Festival, 5 - 15 November, is curated by
the journalist and critic Paulo Camargo and the film scholar Denize Araújo.
The program includes screenings of national and international films and a university
competition show. Three participants will win an internship at the New York Film
Academy.
Routes
Four routes are available for those wishing to visit the Biennial: by foot, by bike,
by van or by bus. It is just a matter of choosing the best itinerary, booking the
visit online and enjoying all the works on show in the city. Visitors can also buy a
bilingual pocket guide, which shows the streets and the exhibition spaces where the
works are exhibited.
Museum Design
The architect Jayme Bernardo designed the exhibition spaces for the various museums
and cultural centers of the Curitiba International Biennial.
Publications
At the start of the event, the Biennial program guide will be distributed in the
exhibition spaces and in various parts of the city. The official site will also
include the full program and general information. The Curitiba International
Biennial and Film Festival catalogues contain detailed information on all the
artists and works and will be available for purchase in October. The guide and the
catalogues are published by Arte e Letra.
