Meets Hans von Marees, juxtaposing the paintings with a selection of sculptures
The work of Hans von Marees divides opinion. For some, he is simply a failed artist; for others, he laid the groundwork for German modernism. What are the reasons for the disparities in the critical reception of the artist's work, which will be presented in its own room at the Neue Pinakothek? What is the relationship between the artist's painting and sculpture dating from the closing years of the 19th century? And what significance can Hans von Marees' work have for a contemporary artist such as Olaf Metzel? "Olaf Metzel Meets Hans von Marees" was born from the living artist's idea to explore Hans von Marees' work from a modern-day perspective; an encounter that will not only be effected through words alone but rather by juxtaposing the paintings with a selection of sculptures by Olaf Metzel. The exhibition will be further complemented by drawings by Hans von Marees from the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, selected by Olaf Metzel and discussed in two lectures by the artist.
