As wisps of pink cotton candy float away and disintegrate into the cool mountain air, Latin music pulses out of speakers as a monitor displays the lyrics, translated into English, karaoke-style. Colombian artist Adriana Arenas Ilian's Sweet Illusions uses these images of innocence to explore the escapist ideals of young love.
The video footage of the cotton candy, projected onto a wall in a mirror image format, brings to mind the sights and smells associated with the circuses and festivals of childhood. The saccharine lyrics of the Latin love songs scrolling across the video monitor on the floor are reminiscent of the naïveté and bliss of pubescent puppy love.
Born in Colombia and currently a New York resident, Ilian has studied art in Bogota, London and New York. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Colombia and Italy and in New York - most notably in Greater New York, a recent exhibition at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center.
