Richard Deacon

L.A. Louver Gallery, Venice

Beyond the Clouds. The artist does not directly represent things in his sculpture. Rather, he explores territories beyond reality, through an investigation of opposing dynamic relationships, such as mass and volume, interior and exterior, surface and edge. The exhibition, includes work that reflects the dialogue the artist has created with a range of material, including stainless steel, wood and ceramic. Openness and transparency are part of Deacon's political agenda, which feeds the work and guides him in the use of democratic materials

comunicato stampa

L.A. Louver is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by world-renown British sculptor Richard Deacon.

Beyond the Clouds

Deacon does not directly represent things in his sculpture. Rather, he explores territories beyond reality, through an investigation of opposing dynamic relationships, such as mass and volume, interior and exterior, surface and edge. This small and tightly focused exhibition, includes work that reflects the dialogue the artist has created with a range of material, including stainless steel in Infinity #21, 2004 and Infinity #22, 2004; wood in Jacob, 2004, and ceramic in the exhibition title piece Beyond the Clouds, 2002. Deacon allows the rhythm of fabrication to guide the development of the form. Openness and transparency are part of Deacon's political agenda, which feeds the work and guides him in the use of democratic materials. Language is also pivotal in his sculpture, rooted in Deacon's reading of poetic, philosophical and linguistic texts. And consistent with his previous exhibitions, meaning in the work is in part derived from the gallery environment -- for example Infinity #21, 2004 and Infinity #22, 2004 are displayed in an outside/inside configuration utilizing the open air "skyroom" gallery and the adjacent interior space.

The Artist

Richard Deacon first received international attention in the early 1980s with his inclusion in important group exhibitions at the Tate, ICA, Hayward and Serpentine Galleries in London; the Central and South American tour of “Transformations: New British Sculpture,” in 1983; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1984. Deacon was also included in the landmark exhibition “A Quiet Revolution: British Sculpture Since 1965,” that toured from Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Newport Harbor Art Museum in California; the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C. and the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY. Deacon has since maintained an active schedule of museum and gallery exhibitions throughout the world, including solo shows at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 1988; and the Tate Gallery, Liverpool in 1999. L.A. Louver was proud to inaugurate its new gallery space with Richard Deacon’s first West Coast exhibition in 1995. Deacon was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 1987; in 1997 he was made a ‘Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres’ by the Ministry of Culture in France; in 1998 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy and in 1999 he received a CBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Concurrent to Richard Deacon: Beyond the Clouds, LA Louver will present recent paintings by Tony Berlant, Domenico Bianchi, Per Kirkeby, Jonathan Lasker, Jason Martin and Ed Moses.
