Stephen Albert and David Bailin

Koplin Del Rio Gallery, Los Angeles

Albert's newest series of work challenges some of his own notions of the still-life as an aesthetic arrangement of carefully chosen objects on a table under carefully controlled lighting conditions. Born on the prairies of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bailin experienced a land that expands across miles of rolling plains under vast expanse of sky.

STEVEN ALBERT
“Egyptian Stiff Lifes"

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 5, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Koplin Del Rio Gallery is pleased to announce our third exhibition of paintings by Stephen Albert. Steven Albert's newest series of work challenges some of his own notions of the still-life as an aesthetic arrangement of carefully chosen objects on a table under carefully controlled lighting conditions, by presenting unconventional themes, objects, and cropping techniques. The objects depicted are cropped such that elements that were typically found in still-life paintings, such as tabletops and background walls are minimized and sometimes vanish completely.

The still-lifes are confrontational, statuesque, and sphinx-like in their mute, impenetrable presentation, suggesting elements of Ancient Egypt, which is a subject that interests Albert. In this new series of work, he adopted this theme as an underlying guide, and the mundane objects, such as paperbags and cardboard boxes, became pyramids, colossi, or tombs.

Albert’s mastery of fine craftsmanship in paint application is apparent in these works, while the objects suggest mystery and mythology, without necessarily offering answers. Thus, in the end, they are still-lifes: an aesthetic arrangement of objects.

Steven Albert earned his bachelor's degree in Studio Art from Bowdoin College in Maine. As a student, he was awarded the Anne Bartlett-Lewis Memorial Award for Artistic Excellence and the Second Purchase Award at the Washington and Jefferson National Painting Show. He was awarded Second Place at Fraser Gallery’s Annual Juried Exhibition in Washington, D.C. Albert has participated in group and solo exhibitions throughout the country, and he currently lives and works in Brunswick, Maine.

ensions between highlights and shadows, between foreground and background, and between outside and inside. These glimpses through doorways, windows, and cropped views of tables and chairs become meditations of place and perspective.

In "Jumpin' Java #1", Albert divides the canvas plane using two controlling vertical lines. This composition enables Albert to manipulate the café setting to refer to four of five different kinds of spaces within one locale. Using opacity, transparency and reflections, Albert explores the folds of the café interior which are described explicitly, while the activities and people that occupy that space remain elusive; they are held in the margins, temporary and transitional like an after thought. Through these archetypal spaces, the passages in Albert's small canvases become metaphors for the human experience of shared space.

DAVID BAILIN

"New Drawings"

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 5, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Koplin Del Rio Gallery is pleased to announce our second exhibition of drawings by David Bailin. The ephemeral drawings depict narratives endowed with a sense of mystery, searching, and progression. Drawn in charcoal on paper, the narratives have no beginning or end, just the great expanse in which the characters, silent and stoic, are suspended.

Born on the prairies of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, David Bailin experienced a land that expands across miles of rolling plains under vast expanse of sky. The figures in his paintings are inspired by the people who live there, and he views the paper in a similar way to how he saw the prairies, with their grid of homesteads, farms and ranch lands. He captures the feeling of vast expanse, penetrated with personal events that seem to linger for a moment and disappear. By drawing these moments, he suspends them, thereby resisting that inevitability of the disappearing moment.

David Bailin received his MA from Hunter College in New York and his BFA at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has received fellowship awards from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the Arkansas Art Council. Bailin was given a solo exhibition in 1999 at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock. His work has been acquired by a number of public institutions including the Arkansas Art Center Foundation Collection in Little Rock, and Klutznick National Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. David Bailin currently lives and works in Little Rock, Arkansas.
