"The Devil In Me"
GV/AS is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new drawings by Magalie Guerin, most of which may have been inspired, or not, by unrequited love, shape-shifting demons and lovers, accidental photography and whimsical pornography. The drawings included are rendered in pencil, ink and watercolor. Guerin has imagined herself into the worlds created by Joel Peter-Witkin, Diane Arbus, Jan Saudek, to name a few. Images that were seemingly fixed become mutable in Guérin¹s reformation. Her iconography is forthright and honest: glasses, sneakers, tattoos, visage.Guerin invites you to navigate the landscape through the various souls she inhabits. It is a precisely detailed and seamless world, fluid in her ability to travel through time, alter gender, even transform the finality of death into something brief like the time-span of a kiss.Magalie Guerin was born in Montreal in 1973. First trained as a criminologist, she then worked professionally as a photographer before moving to the U.S. where she has been the director of GV/AS since 2002. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
Opening reception: Friday June 11, 7-10pm
