Exhibition project of the Akademie Schloss Solitude, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne on view in Stuttgart from September 30 - November 12, 2000 and in Saint-Etienne from December 14, 2000 - March 26, 2001.
The exhibition "Solitude in the Museum" was realized on occasion of Akademie Schloss Solitude 's tenth anniversary and is the result of a unique collaboration between the three institutions - Akademie Schloss Solitude , Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne in the French partner region of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Seventeen international artists will present a variety of works, some created during their residency at Solitude, others specifically for this exhibition. Representative for the multitude of activities, themes and discourses characteristic for the Akademie, the objects encompass almost all contemporary media and techniques used today. The paintings, drawings, videos and web-based art as well as installations and a project by an architecture group give a concentrated insight into current artistic practice and discourse. The differences of the institutions stimulate a dialog and at the same time a confrontation of the artists with both sites - on one hand the residency program where artists can work experimentally outside the urban context and on the other hand, the museum which can look back on a long history of collecting and organizing exhibitions.
Four curators from both museums, Jacques Beauffet and Martine Dancer from Saint-Etienne and Ulrike Gauss and Gudrun Inboden from Stuttgart selected the artists from the large pool of former fellows: François Joseph Chabrillat (France), Serge Comte (Iceland/France), Gruppo A12 (Italy), Nicolás Fernández (Berlin/Switzerland), Teresa Hubbard (Texas) / Alexander Birchler (Texas), Ute Friederike Jürss (Lübeck), Betsy Kaufman (New York), Dominique Lämmli (Berlin), Simon Lamunière (Switzerland), Christine Meierhofer (Berlin), Pavel Pepperstein (Israel/Russia), Philip Pocock (Cologne), Karin Sander (Stuttgart), Gordon Shrigley (Great Britain), Wiebke Siem (Berlin) and Stephen Waddell (Berlin/Vancouver).
Works by Philip Pocock, Udo Noll and Gregor Stehle or the installation by the Italian architecture group A 12 with Fabrizio Gallanti and Elena Carmangnani are typical for the frequent collaborations of Akademie fellows.
A new form of dialog is created in Karin Sander's contribution - as a former fellow and juror, she chose to present the artists she selected as a juror in 1998/1999, among others Peter Arason (Iceland), Ingolfur Arnasson (Iceland), Montien Boonma (Thailand), Kendell Geers (Solitude/Alphaville), Douglas Kolk (USA), Gabriele Langendorf (Frankfurt), Sora Kim (South Korea), Veronika Kellndorfer (Berlin), Dörte Meyer (Berlin), Ragna Robertsdottir (Iceland), Yvonne Trapp (Berlin), Gregory Volk (New York), Georg Winter (Stuttgart), M.S. Umesh (India), p.t.t.red (Berlin/New York) und Piotr Uklanski (New York).
Tours and talks with the artists, curators and organizers of the exhibition are planned. For the KunstNacht (art night) on November 4, 2000, Akademie fellows will present a performance in the white cube setting of the museum.
On occasion of the exhibition opening on Friday, September 29 and to open the new music festival "Music from Solitude", a concert by former Akademie fellows will take place in the lecture hall of the Staatsgalerie at 8:45 p.m. Marc Sabat and Matteo Fargion will perform on violin and keyboard from the "Swabian Songbook". As 1000g-et-une nuit.com, Nicolás Fernández and Mourad Cheraït will present "White music for pigs, rats and snakes". Admission is free.
A catalog in German/French/English (200 pages, color images) will be available for DM 48.
