The exhibition explores the possibility of being happy in modern life.

RCA graduate Azumi Sakata and University of Brighton graduate Nick Sebley invite you to their exhibition ÔHappinessÕ at the Brighton Media Centre Gallery.
Azumi lives in Tokyo and makes etchings and dolls in her home. Her work is both comic and dark and often features enigmatic characters looking for something in remote locales- a man searches for happiness under the ground, a robot harvests a glowing flower in the ocean depths. Mysterious and absurd the images are like stills from a dream, and can be taken at face value or as metaphors for the inner world of desires and emotions. Either way- unifying the works is a sense that in bleak places or mind states there is the possibility to find beauty, sustenance and renewal.

Nick lives next to a shopping mall in Brighton and thus is also interested in finding meaning and beauty in unpromising environments. He uses chalk, clay and bricks dug up from the South Downs to paint the urban motifs he encounters daily -Burberry check, St.George cross etc. By integrating these natural, ancient materials with modern designs he wants to find new meanings and resonance in being English and living in an urbanised reality.
