An American Collection
Celebrating 100 Years of Dali'
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (December, 2003) The Salvador Dalà Museum will honor the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Dalà with a grand exhibition titled: Dalà Centennial: An American Collection, opening on January 9 and running through September 26, 2004. The exhibition will showcase the depth and breadth of the Museum's phenomenal collection and archives in a manner never displayed before and demonstrate the importance of the artist and the historical significance of the collection to the world of art, culture and ideas.
The underlying organization of the exhibition will be chronological, illustrating the various periods in the evolution of DalÃ's artistic vision. Within the exhibition, some sections will be organized thematically to demonstrate the development of persistent themes and symbolism in DalÃ's art. Throughout the exhibition, the visitor will be guided by interpretive text/graphics panels adding discourse and perspective to the exhibition experience.
Two other museums are loaning works to the exhibition. The Dalà Foundation in Spain is sending two stereoscopic works: Dalà Lifting the skin of the Mediterranean Sea in order to show Gala the Birth of Venus, 1978 and The Foot of Gala, 1974. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is loaning Soft Construction with Boiled Beans: Premonition of Civil War, one of DalÃ's most celebrated works. Philadelphia will host in January 2005 the Dalà retrospective exhibition, which opens this September at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
In addition to the more frequently exhibited oil paintings and prints, the Dali Museum exhibition will include many rare and less frequently seen objects such as DalÃ's sculptures, watercolors, jewelry, flatware, and commercial illustrations.
The exhibition also will feature selected works from the Museum's collection, archive and library, many of which never have been exhibited. These will include recently acquired preparatory drawings for paintings in the collection; original manuscripts acquired from the estate of André Breton; significant historical documents including birth certificates, school grades and diplomas; handwritten manuscript pages and the published Dalà contributions to the magazine Studium; samples of reading material from DalÃ's library; rare illustrated Surrealist catalogs for which Dalà produced superb etchings; historic brochures and catalogs that document DalÃ's participation in numerous exhibitions.
Dalà Centennial: An American Collection is sponsored by Progress Energy. Additional funding is provided from the Embassy of Spain.
