A Retrospective

Opening July 30, Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective is the first in-depth retrospective of American artist Lee Bontecou. A leading figure of late twentieth-century art, Bontecou incorporates a variety of figurative, organic, and mechanistic references into her work, suggesting states of transformation between the natural and man-made, order and chaos, delicacy and ferocity. The exhibition presents not only her celebrated welded-steel sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s but also her lesser-known later work-including drawings and large-scale suspended pieces-most of it on view for the first time. A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The exhibition was jointly organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

The national sponsor of the exhibition is Altria Group, Inc.

The national tour is made possible by The Henry Luce Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, Friedrike Merck, and Sarah-Ann and Werner H. Kramarsky. The accompanying catalogue was made possible, in part, by Agnes Gund and Daniel Shapiro, and The Ruth and Murray Gribin Foundation.

The New York presentation is made possible by Altria Group, Inc. with additional generous support from Anna Marie and Robert F. Shapiro. The accompanying educational programs are made possible by BNP Paribas.
