Contemporary Hong Kong Wood Sculpture
This exhibition features wood sculpture by some of Hong Kong's most
established and prominent sculptors. The seven artists are Cheung Yee, Tong
King Sum, Victor Li Ki Kwok, Jaffa Lam Laam, Chow Shun Keung, Kevin Fung Lik
Yan and Victor Tai Sheung Shing. Wood has a long and important history of
use in traditional Chinese culture such as in furniture and architectural
elements yet this exhibition shows how contemporary artists are able to
transform and interpret it into something totally new. While many of the
works included in the exhibition are conceptual in nature, the uniquely
visceral quality of wood, once itself living, is often exploited by each of
the sculptors in their own way to produce abstract and semi-figurative
forms. Many of the works are based upon the human form which wood is able
to convey in all its complexity and sensuality, while others emphasize the
unique texture and surface qualities of each individual piece of wood. In
other cases the wood is totally obscured in deference to the artists'
concern with form, colour and texture.
There will be an opportunity to meet some of the artists who have agreed to
give guided tours of the exhibition on Saturday 18th September and Saturday
2nd October at 3 pm. These are free and open to the public. In addition
the artists will be giving a demonstration on wood sculpting at the Hong
Kong Visual Arts Centre on Saturday 11th September from 2.30 to 4.30 pm.
Studio rental is subsidized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
