Wilkinson Chris - The New Art Gallery Walsall
A National Touring exhibition. This exhibition aims to show that architectural design, even when considered practical, can be so imaginative that it possesses the qualities of the visionary and the fantastic.
A National Touring exhibition
All our experiences of the built environment are the result of the success or failure of hundreds of individual ambitions and dreams. At the same time, the towns and cities we inhabit form the residue of a much larger world that never got built of visions of the future that remained on paper due to lack of funds, political changes or simple impracticality because technically they were way ahead of time. How might the world look today had the politics, economics, and taste of our predecessors been different? And how close might the architecture of the future bring us to a world already familiar from science fiction films and the fantastic virtual environments of computer games? This exhibition aims to propose answers to these questions and to show that architectural design, even when considered practical, can be so imaginative that it possesses the qualities of the visionary and the fantastic.
The exhibition includes works by Robert Adam, Archigram, Sir Charles Barry, Etienne-Louis Boullee, Sir William Chambers, Foster.
