Studio Caparrelli is pleased to announce its continuing collaboration with British artist Susan Stockwell, presenting an exhibition titled: Stitched-Up.

Susan Stockwell has continually pursued new approaches to making sculpture, challenging and broadening the traditional use of materials and processes; her interest and fascination with paper has brought her to work with everything from giant rolls used to make toilet tissues to used coffee filters and from tea bags to recycled fruit boxes.

Using techniques such as stitching and sewing, traditionally associated with craft and the ‘everyday’, Susan Stockwell imbues these processes with new meanings and readings, and continues to challenge and provoke her audience.

At Studio Caparrelli, Stockwell presents a new series of two and three-dimensional pieces, all related to maps and cartography. Reminiscent of by-gone times and extremely topical, maps and atlases are often used as symbols of power and in Stockwell’s work reveal much more than what is expected.

The centrepiece of the show is extraordinary: a life-size ball gown made exactly out of two whole atlases - the coastline of Africa creating a fetching neckline and Central America being the perfect shape to become a shoulder strap. Next to it, even a long frilly skirt made out of Ordinance Survey maps of Scotland appears almost ordinary!

Other of her works reveal deeper concerns and it is evident that issues such as globalisation, colonialism and price wars dictate the choice of Stockwell’s materials.
A map of India, made solely out of used tea bags stitched together is a beautiful and precious object, but unmistakably also a symbolic image that challenges the viewer to question one of the cornerstones of British life: a cup of tea.

Private View Tuesday 12th October, 6,30 pm to 9pm

Open 13th October to 26th November 2004
Thursdays and Fridays 11am to 6pm and by appointment

Stitched-Up is a show that proves once again that Susan Stockwell is a talent to watch closely.
