Simonson's work stems from her investigations into repetitive patterns and algorithmic systems. One system may involve covering from ceiling to floor, a wall or room with consecutive rows of tape. Each successive layer conforming to the imperfections of the previous row where by a subtle crease evolves into a voluminous shape.
Plane Space is delighted to present a new installation and drawings by Elizabeth Simonson. This exhibition, Simonson's first solo exhibition at the gallery, will open Thursday, October 21st, and be on view through Sunday, November 21st.
A reception for the artist will be held Saturday evening, October 23rd, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Simonson exhibited in a two-person exhibition at Plane Space during the gallery's inaugural season in 2002. At that time, her installation work was made exclusively from tape adhered directly to the gallery walls. Since that show, she has expanded her media to include wire and EVA foam. This upcoming exhibition will comprise both a tape and wire piece on the walls of the gallery as well as foam installation work situated on the floor. Providing continuity between the three-dimensional works will be a series of related drawings.

Each successive layer conforming to the imperfections of the previous row where by a subtle crease evolves into a voluminous shape. Whether working in two or three dimensions, she seeks to initiate a task and allow the work to compose itself. Her recent work with cut EVA foam is derived from transferring architectural templates to a large scale, multiplying them and layering them on a shifted axis. She embraces the element of human error as part of her systems and incorporates it as each piece evolves.
Simonson, based in New York, received both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Hunter College in Manhattan. In addition to her critically acclaimed exhibition at The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, she has participated in a number of group shows throughout the country, including the Kohler Arts Center. Three of her drawings are a part of The Judith Rothschild Foundation's Contemporary Drawings Collection pending gift to the Museum of Modern Art.
