Chiara Dynys

Ars Futura Gallery, Zurich

The work arranged by the artist particularly for this show represents symbols for such existential contradictions and latent human ambiguity. Materials (tessera, mirrors) and textures are crucial to the perception as well as orientation in space.

comunicato stampa

Chiara Dynys dedicates her work to existential questions. In contrast to contemporary artistic tendencies committing to changing processes of individual perception and communication in an increasingly accelerated and fragmented information society, her work is pointing to permanence and entireness of human existence and its constant oscillation between opposite poles. The work arranged by Chiara Dynys particularly for Ars Futura Gallery represents symbols for such existential contradictions and latent human ambiguity.

She belongs to the generation of artists who rejected conventional terms of style and genre at the end of the 80's in order to open up to intimacy and contemplation in sculpture. Her work requires, like it was essential for the reception of Minimal Art of the 60's (e.g. Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris etc.), the viewer s active participation. The "open artwork" (Umberto Eco) demands communication between the artist and the viewer and unfolds thereby a wide scope of interpretation. The changing view of the sculpture in its space has an impact on the viewers experience and reflection. In a similar way perception of Dynys' installations is such an open process. Formal-geometric aspects which were crucial to Minimal Art step into the background while philosophical, sociological or linguistic questions become more important. In contrast to Minimal Artists she aims at emotional and transcendental levels. Here she offers a possibility of self-reflection for the viewer. Materials (tessera, mirrors) and textures are crucial to the perception as well as orientation in space. Materials are crafted handmade and not industrially like in Minimal Art. An emotional universe is being opened through visual and tactile experiences. Reception requires time and empathy. Slowness is program.

Two opposite mosaic monoliths represent a metaphor for risky transitions. In another work two mirrors appear in the form of the words one and two. The duality of the numbers 1 and 2 is considered a foundation stone of philosophy. In the shape of mirrors the numbers rival each other in the reflection of the viewer. A yet different mirrorplay represents the words hole and whole in opposite places and thereby suggests a metamorphosis from void to whole. The viewer s choice is to confront himself/herself with his/her own mirrored image in the duality of the words.

The double nature of things is realised as simple visual metaphors, as numeric sequence and as wordplay. The variations of the subject confront the viewer with double images which characterise extremes of human existence. The work is requesting the viewer to notice this existential level. Against the omnipresent virtual worlds and the arbitrariness of the media age Chiara Dynys focuses on authentic experience and confrontation with individual existence. Dynys' sculptures refer to an inner life. In contrast to Minimal Art which appears as what it is - surface and volume, Dynys' sculptures can be read with an emotionality which is not known in Minimal Art.
