L'explorateur et les explorateurs devant l'histoire de l'exploration ..!
Le theatre du monde

With Georges Adeagbo's "Explorer and Explorers Facing the History of
Exploration ..! The World Theatre" the Ludwig Museum presents one of its
most recent acquisitions.

This installation was one of the main works at the most recent documenta.
It comprises more than 1500 objects assembled by the Benin-based artist in
both his homeland and Germany. These everyday artefacts include
traditional African art, portraits of such leading art world figures as
Joseph Beuys and Harald Szeemann, books, magazines, flags, and all kinds
of devotional aids, which Adeagbo orders spatially, establishing new
connections.

His strictly composed conglomerations of objects are always directed
towards a local public. The installation shown at documenta 11 was
oriented towards Kassel as the exhibition location, while the version to
be presented in the Ludwig Museum's DC Saal will be clearly related to the
city of Cologne. The visitor will thus be sent on a voyage of discovery
into his or her own history. S/he is also invited to devote attention to
the collective past and present - and to call in question views about what
is Other.

A catalogue will be published by "Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther Konig"
with essays by Homi K. Bhabha and Viktoria Schmidt-Linsenhoff.
