The Mirrors of Fiction. The exhibition aims to promote the image of a complex, incisive Pere Calders who, with his short stories and novels, reflects a disturbing image of the reality in which we are immersed, causing the secure world we have built for ourselves to shake. Taking a step beyond the Calders who has been pigeonholed into the genre of the short story, Castellanos and Melcion aim to restore the Calders who was a pioneer in literary research, in touch with the avant-garde movements and magical realism.
The Mirrors of Fiction.
This coming 27 October, the Centre de Cultura Contemporà nia de Barcelona presents the exhibition Calders. The Mirrors of Fiction, a co-production of the CCCB and the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government), sponsored by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The exhibition curators are Jordi Castellanos, Professor of Catalan at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and Joan Melcion, director of the Modern Languages Service of the UAB and an expert on the work of Pere Calders.
The exhibition aims to promote the image of a complex, incisive Pere Calders who, with his short stories and novels, reflects a disturbing image of the reality in which we are immersed, causing the secure world we have built for ourselves to shake. Taking a step beyond the Calders who has been pigeonholed into the genre of the short story, Castellanos
and Melcion aim to restore the Calders who was a pioneer in literary research, in touch with the avant-garde movements and magical realism. A Calders with a creative interest in other artistic disciplines such as drawing, graphic design, photography, cinema... In short, this xhibition purports to highlight Pere Calders as an exponent of twentieth-century creation.
The exhibition is based around two intertwined approaches: firstly, a documented explanation of the various phases and different aspects of the writer's personal and literary career, and secondly, a presentation of the literary world of Pere Calders, recreated in the form of eight thematic spaces.
One of the main attractions of Calders. The Mirrors of Fiction is the presentation of hitherto unknown documents loaned by the writer's family to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and now exhibited publicly for the very first time. These materials include written documentation from the thirties; Pere Calders' correspondence with his father, with TÃsner and with Francesc Trabal; the written and graphic documentation which illustrates Calders' involvement in the Civil War; drawings, graphic design work and watercolours which were unknown until now; unpublished photographs; and, finally, fragments of a film script and various of Calders' amateur films made in the post-war years.
In order to express the LITERARY WORLD of Calders in the language of exhibition, eight settings are presented, using sound, lighting and objects to evoke recurrent themes in the writer's body of literary work. Each set reproduces texts by Calders: some are written, other recorded in voice off. On leaving each space, visitors can consult lists which allow them to establish the source of the written or recited fragments, and the objects on display.
