Fluttersuckers
amfAR : Photography Portfolio 2004
Reception: Thursday, December 2, 5:30 – 7:30pm
During the month of December, the Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary Street, San
Francisco, CA 94108) will present a new series of works by Chris Finley and an
exhibition of photographs curated by Jack Pierson to benefit the American
Foundation for Aids Research (amfAR).
Chris Finley’s new show, fluttersuckers, includes painting, drawing with
collage, interactive sculpture, and digital printmaking. The title refers to
the characteristics of moths - that flutter - and ticks that suck - and the
characters of those in Finley's painted portraits. The abstract painting, Moths
is an interpretation of nine of President Bush’s cabinet members including
portraits of Vice President Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Colin Powell.
Converted by a computer program into a line drawing, the distorted shapes are
transferred to canvas and painted in a three-color multi-toned composition. A
smaller painting entitled The Tick is a reconstruction of a photo of Sam Walton,
founder of Wal Mart, made using the same technique.
Finley's interactive installation consists of five poles each with a sliding
faux-rock form that goes up or down. Underneath each rock is a secret sculpture.
There is also a table-like sculpture with collaged pages from a children’s book
in which Finley has circled every word. On top of the panel sits a stuffed
Sponge Bob toy covered by hundreds of whittled golf tee sculptures.
The show will include collaged drawings involving word-play puzzles to be solved
by viewers (winners get a free drawing) and other drawings instructing viewers
to a website where they can enter personal information (like the circumference
of their head) to be used as data for future artworks.
Finley received his BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and is
currently an adjunct professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. He was a
1999 SFMOMA SECA (Society from the Encouragement of Contemporary Art) Award
recipient. His work is in many public and private collections including SFMOMA,
LACMA, and MOCA.
In Gallery III, we will be exhibiting a photography portfolio including works by
18 artists, curated by Jack Pierson. amfAR organized the portfolio with all
proceeds benefiting AIDS research. The portfolio is in an edition of 25 and was
previously shown at Chiem and Reed Gallery in New York and Regens Project in Los
Angeles.
The Gallery will be closed for the holidays on December 24th through January
3rd, 2005.
