Must I Paint You a Picture? is an exhibition that brings together six London-based artists who primarily or exclusively work with the medium of painting. Glenn Brown, Silke Otto-Knapp, Bruno Pacheco, Alessandro Raho, Maaike Schoorel and Alexis Marguerite Teplin share an approach to painting that combines a dedication to mastering its techniques with a constant experimentation with its possibilities. The exhibition is guest curated by art critic and curator Pablo Lafuente, and includes around fifteen recent works, with each artist represented by a selection of two or more works, several of which have been made for this exhibition.
The artists’ showing in Must I Paint You a Picture? are all fascinated by the process of painting and their works constitute attempts to create images that work pictorially while, in the process, investigating how this is possible. Through references to the history of painting and their mastery of techniques and materials they question the way painting turns a set of forms and colours into an image that can have a tremendous seductive power. However, the forms of the work in the exhibition are hugely diverse, from hyper realism to abstraction, from oil to watercolour, and from muted to vibrant colours. Not only do the artists have different visual styles, but they are at different stages of their careers and span different generations.
