A dance performance installation

Caroline Broadhead makes a welcome return to Angel Row Gallery following her extremely popular solo exhibition in 1999. This time, she is working with choreographer Angela Woodhouse to create an installation for a dance performance.

Court is a duet for an audience of three. It looks at the notion of disclosure and desire. Within a confined space performers and audience come face to face all witnesses to the events that unfold. This piece is an invitation to enter and explore...

In Court, the performers and audience are inside and outside, viewers and doers, objects and subjects. The viewers are both experiencing and observing the experience. They revolve around the piece, they cross its centre; they are its fabric.

Artist Caroline Broadhead, in collaboration with dance maker Angela Woodhouse, has created a space reminiscent of a courtyard with adjacent and interconnecting spaces or ‘rooms’ in which the viewer happens upon the performer(s). The walls infer solidity but are actually constructed from starched printed linen evoking layers of wallpaper or curtains. Both the performers and viewers are embedded, having the option to pass between, and in and out of the spaces. They are choosing options for themselves and are personalising their experiences of both being viewer and becoming performer. They disclose, they hide, simultaneously connected and disconnected; the tale unravels in the actions of all.

Angela Woodhouse trained in dance and visual art at the Metropolitan University of Manchester, and has an MA (distinction) from University of Surrey. In 1988 she received the Lisa Ullmann scholarship to study with Alwin Nikolais and Murrey Louis in New York. In 1991 she founded Angela Woodhouse & Company. The Company toured nationally to profile venues with works Turning the Tables (1991), Domestic Obsessions (1992), Living Space(1993), and Semi-Detached (1994). After a period of research at Choreodrome in 1995 and as part of a Laban Centre fellowship Angela went on to develop site and installation work, resulting in commissions such as the Rochester City Arts Festival for The Waiting Game in collaboration with Caroline Broadhead 1997.
In 2000 she created a life altered, an installation for one performer and one viewer made in partnership with dancer Stine Nilsen (Candoco, and formally Jeremy James Company). The piece was last performed at The Place Theatre in December 2002. Court further develops the ideas inherent in a life altered, specifically of intimacy, detail and identity.
Angela has taught at the Tanzhoff Akadamie, Switzerland, The Laban Centre London, Central St Martins School of Art, London, and London Contemporary Dance School. She has recently created a site work in collaboration with the Laban graduate programme entitled Tamasa. This work was performed on the bed of the creek and at neighbouring APT gallery.
Angela was selected as a commissioned artist for the Place Prize 2004. Again she collaborated with Caroline to create Threshold, an exploration of intimacy within the theatre auditorium.
The central collaborator on Court is Caroline Broadhead. Caroline comes from a background in jewellery and craft. Over her career she has developed a distinctive reputation for her stunning installations using clothing as metaphor. Her work has regularly toured through the Crafts Council; she has exhibited nationally and internationally including the Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and here at the V&A. In 1997 she won the Jerwood Prize for Textiles. She has lately become concerned with the architectural aspects of her installations, for example, Still Light 1999, in which threads from a window mark out the light coming in. She has collaborated with choreographers in the past, including Rosemary Lee for her work Stranded (a South Bank commission 1991).
She currently teaches at Goldsmiths College and at University of Middlesex, and has been invited to teach at the International Sommerakadamie in Salzburg for the last three years. Court is her second collaboration with Angela Woodhouse.

Court will be touring to venues across the UK: Quay Gallery, Isle of Wight Jan 18th -22nd, Alsager Arts Centre, North West, Feb 22nd-24th, Dartington Colege of Arts, South West Feb 05, and Bretton Hall, Yorkshire June 05
