Paul Noble

Migros Museum, Zurich

Solo show.

Since 1995, Paul Noble (*1963) has worked on monumental pencil drawings of a fictitious town called Nobson Newtown. These works link the buildings and places that constitute the geography, history and mythology of Nobson Newtown. The exhibition at the migros museum für gegenwartskunst provides the first opportunity to view the Nobson Newtown project in Switzerland.

In the early 1990s Noble laid the foundation stone of Nobson Newtown: a hand-drawn map of the town and a computer-designed script (Nobfont), based on the forms of modernist architecture. The architectonic planning of this new town, designed and built by its inhabitants from the ruins of the old one, is a reminder of the influence of the Garden City Movement on 20th-century town planning. Social reform ideas and the improvement of towns’ aesthetic appearance were absolutely central to that movement. Nobson Newtown likewise conjures up such diverse utopian ‘follies’ as the pavilion built by Victor Pasmore at Peterlee in 1970, or Nicolai Ceausescu’s megalomaniac People’s Palace in Bucharest.

The ‘Paul Noble’ exhibition has been organised by the migros museum für gegenwartskunst, Zurich, the Whitechapel Gallery, London and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.
