Draws his inspiration from many sources, among them, the Spanish still-lifes called bodegones as well as post-war European Expressionism. His new deeply textured works, almost stucco-like in character, echo his strong connection to African culture, specifically Mali, where he has a studio. This exhibition includes 15 paintings and 7 watercolors, works completed by the artist in the past three years.
C&M Arts is pleased to present Miquel Barceló: Recent Works, the first major exhibition in the United States since the artist last showed with Leo Castelli in 1995. Miquel Barceló draws his inspiration from many sources, among them, the Spanish still-lifes called bodegónes as well as post-war European Expressionism exemplified by Jean Dubuffet and Antoni Tà pies. Despite his many sources, Barceló has established a unique place for himself in this evolution. His new deeply textured works, almost stucco-like in character, echo his strong connection to African culture, specifically Mali, where he has a studio.
This exhibition includes 15 paintings and 7 watercolors, works completed by the artist in the past three years. The largely abstract paintings are reminiscent of the natural environments that Barceló has responded to his entire life, from the sea that surrounds Mallorca, his birthplace, to the surreal landscapes he has explored in Mali. These radical stylistic shifts in his painting are evident in works such as Fruits de Novembre and Bodegón avec Protozoaires et Trous Noirs.
The fully illustrated catalogue contains an informative essay by the noted art historian, Dore Ashton. Her text examines Barceló s thirst for travel, his innovative working methods, and the major artists and intellectual movements that have inspired his work.
