In November the Andrew Mummery Gallery will present a second instalment of Philip Akkerman's life long project. Since 1981, the artist has painted nothing but self portraits, some 1300 paintings and 1700 drawings.
In November the Andrew Mummery Gallery will present a second instalment of Philip Akkerman's life long project. Since 1981, the artist has painted nothing but self portraits, some 1300 paintings and 1700 drawings. In 1986 he wrote, "I must continue making self portraits as long as I live, for better or for worse. I reproduce my life. Broadly speaking we all experience the same. I paint one of the many. Consequently, I paint everyone."
Philip Akkerman was born in Vaasen in the Netherlands in 1957 and lives and works in The Hague. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague in 1999.
