Paintings, Drawings, and Multiples
“Helen Slater as Supergirl,†is Craig Drennen’s first solo exhibition in New York City. The exhibition consists of paintings, drawings, and sculptural multiples all based on the 1984 movie Supergirl. Drennen organizes his entire artistic practice around Supergirl, which starred Helen Slater in the title role. It allows Drennen the opportunity to comment on the ascendancy of film from the vantage point of traditional media, and to refer to a subject that “is familiar to everyone, but not truly known by anyone.â€
Drennen’s work—more conceptual than pop—involves “paired†components that challenge handmade art as a unique object, while simultaneously relying on artistic accomplishment. Drennen references Supergirl primarily through the information given in the credits: producer, director, cast list, and technical information. Drennen writes this information on simple notebook paper then re-draws (or re-paints) both the front and back of the notebook paper on two separate supports to create a related “pair.†The pieces are not diptychs; each member of the pair is a separate piece, in the tradition of Rauchenberg’s Factum I and Factum II.
The works in this show were made at the Vermont Studio Center; the Triangle Artist Residency, Brooklyn, NY; The Lacoste School of the Arts in Provence, France; and at the artist’s studio in Savannah, GA.
