Tribute to Antigone. The artist experiments with fabric as her main material. Her experimentation is not an end but the means for approaching the unattainable. Time is present, existing in the texture of the works and in their inner rhythm which can be felt everywhere, in small consecutive gestures.
Tribute to Antigone
For twenty years now Varvara Mavrakaki has been following a wholly consistent course which, however, keeps changing from one stage to the next.
Her latest work is different again yet still recognisably hers.
Space is dominant, having started from the canvas, going on to installations and now coming back onto panels with elements of nature, which sometimes reach the point of dense abstraction.
Time is present, existing in the texture of the works and in their inner rhythm which can be felt everywhere, in small consecutive gestures.
The Process –sometimes dark and heavy, sometimes dreamlike and invisible– is carried on by the viewers of the work.

Among her recent projects was her participation in the 11th International Triennial of Tapestry at the Central Museum of Textile in Lodz, Poland in 2004.
