Lieber Maler, male Mir (Dear painter, paint for me)
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce its first exhibition of Martin Kippenberger in New York, the series "Lieber Maler, male mir" (Dear painter, paint for me) from 1981.
This series of large realist paintings, which will be shown together for the first time since their initial exhibition in Berlin over twenty years ago, has had an enormous influence on contemporary painting to this day.
The "Lieber Maler, male mir" paintings incorporate all key aspects of Kippenberger’s artistic vocabulary: his own persona and self-mythologizing; Germanic historical and cultural references; and the influences of his travels and explorations around the world.
The artist commissioned a professional billboard painter called Werner to realize his concept for these paintings. Kippenberger fully acknowledges Werner’s role in this project, as if to ridicule the pretensions of the art scene of the day in Germany.
The exhibition and accompanying fully–illustrated catalogue, with a text by Alison Gingeras, have been prepared in collaboration with the Estate of Martin Kippenberger, Cologne.
