neues Wachstum (new increase)

For the seventh Open Weekend of KUNST-MITTE-NORD Galleries at 8th. and 9th. of April we will be open until 11pm.

For her second solo show at rekord, Antje Blumenstein has chosen an icon of art history
as her point of reference: Caspar David Friedrich’s Eismeer (Arctic Sea, also known as
The Wreck of the Hope).

Blumenstein links this painting with a photo from her own collection showing three young
friends in a boot. She constructs a polystyrene model of Friedrich’s Arctic Sea in the gallery
space and has the small photograph – enlarged to monumental proportions – take the place
of a picture on the wall. In this way, public and private levels of memory are mixed.
The famous artwork – part of collective memory, the subject of in-depth study, loaded with
interpretations – is called to mind using a profane everyday material.

The photograph as a storage media for memories of personal history is shown both inside the
gallery and outside in the form of a large-format poster, rendering this personal memory public
and transporting it out of the narrow space of “restricted” public exposure within the art scene
into the anonymous public realm of urban life. Its presentation as a supposed advertising
poster adds another level: the artist’s marketing of her own memory.

This is a process that is often expected from artists as a matter of course... opening up,
expressing oneself, baring an inner world, coming to terms with lived experience in works of art.

The light of interpretations of the ship dashed to pieces in the Arctic Sea as an image of
disillusion and failed adventure reflects on the teenage snapshot: a picture of young women in
a boat, synonymous with departures, prospects and hope.

Opening: April, 08th. | 6:00 pm
