New Work

Gallery Neubacher announces today the opening of the latest exhibition by artist, John Smialek. One of the Toronto art scene’s great talents, Smialek is making waves. His large encaustic pieces grace the walls of Toronto’s most spectacular venue – The Carlu. These art pieces were created in the remote forest behind one of his childhood homes, near a sOpening evening is Friday April 8th, 2005 from 7-10 p.m.ecluded spot by a meandering river, which was witness to many dramatic experiences. In part, this entire process is a requiem for his father and sister, both of whom passed on at this location. Wax was melted and pigmented over an open fire and then poured into reservoirs constructed from snow and ice. These reservoirs recorded the shadows that were cast by the trees in the surrounding forest. All of the wood that was used for the fire came from trees that once stood there. The intent and result was that all elements used in this production came from the immediate area. These castings were then transported to his studio in Toronto where they were placed in molten wax, poured into hand made frames, and then further manipulated with fire. This entire process was recorded by filmmaker Aaron Woodley and Photographed by Sian Richards.
