The Emerging Curator Award

SFAC Gallery, San Francisco

Todd Herman, the winner of the 2004 Award, curates the exhibition entitled In Passing: A Show About Death. The exhibition is an exploration inspired by personal experience, originating from conversations the curator engaged in about our society's complicated interactions with the artifacts, images, and memories of death. Some of the included works are commemorative, some political, others darkly humorous, and still others conjure mythic understandings borne from watching a life pass into ancestry.

Todd Herman , the winner of the 2004 Emerging Curator Award and noted SF photographer and filmmaker, curates the exhibition entitled In Passing: A Show About Death. He was selected from a pool of three finalists, all of whom presented well-developed and compelling proposals.

The 2004 Emerging Curator Award was created by the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery in order to foster the development of the Bay Area’s vibrant curatorial community. The award is open to all curators and curatorial partnerships residing in the nine Bay Area counties, while the artists in the proposed exhibitions can range from local to international. This is a truly unique opportunity as it provides the space, resources, and support of the Gallery to further the development of the curator’s vision into a significant exhibition.

In Passing: A Show About Death is an exploration inspired by personal experience, originating from conversations the curator engaged in about our society’s complicated interactions with the artifacts, images, and memories of death. Some of the included works are commemorative, some political, others darkly humorous, and still others conjure mythic understandings borne from watching a life pass into ancestry. It includes work by professional as well as non-professional artists and touches on aspects of the very substance and frailty of human life as it passes, while exploring both the diversity as well as the common threads in our experiences of death.

The exhibition is comprised of photography, video, artifacts, painting, and, a participatory component where viewers are invited to contribute to an epitaph archive. There is also a concurrent book release and satellite exhibit spaces.

Opening Reception on Friday, April 22 from 6-8 pm in the Main Gallery. Open and free to the public.
