Ingolf Timpner was born in Mönchengladbach in 1963, and lives and works in Düsseldorf. In 2003/4, the Kunstverein Bad Salzdetfurth and Museum Bad Arolsen presented his work in a solo show, "Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen". Timpner's work has entered the collections of the DZ-Bank in Frankfurt-am-Main, the E.ON Group in Düsseldorf and Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

The artist has been exploring the medium of black-and-white photography continuously over the years. In the latest exhibition, Pinakothek, Galerie Bugdahn und Kaimer is presenting eight large-scale (111 x 106.5 cm) photographic works on baryta paper. Accompanied by a still life, seven are portraits of men and women, photographed in museum surroundings. Each of the figures holds a highly characteristic object in their hands, an attribute - cuddly toys, stuffed animals, a human skull - with which she or he enters an inseparable association.

Rich in contrasts, precise in the use of form and with expressive gesture, these utterly distinctive works articulate sublimity and beauty by contemporary means. In the ambiguity of the title, Pinakothek, with its twin association of the Collection of paintings in real galleries, and of a collection of pictures in the sense of an artistic resource or an atlas of 'images' (illustrations, symbols, representations), a central motif in Timpner's artistic approach emerges - the fascination of intermeshing complex pictorial realities and his play with their manifold references.

The outcome of the process, his art, never smacks of laboured construction but is realised as one dynamic act, with sensitivity and great assurance.

Ingolf Timpner wurde 1963 in Mönchengladbach geboren und lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf. 2003/2004 wurde die Einzelausstellung "Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen" im Kunstverein Bad Salzdetfurth und im Museum Bad Arolsen gezeigt. Die Werke Timpners sind in den Sammlungen der DZ-Bank, Frankfurt, des Unternehmens E.ON, Düsseldorf, und des Museum Ludwig, Köln, vertreten.

Der Künstler setzt sich seit Jahren kontinuierlich mit dem Medium der Schwarzweiß-Photographie auseinander. In der jetzigen Ausstellung Pinakothek zeigt die Galerie Bugdahn und Kaimer acht großformatige Photoarbeiten (111 x 106,5 cm) auf Barytpapier; neben einem Stillleben handelt es sich um Portraits von Männern und Frauen, die in musealem Kontext aufgenommen wurden. Jede der Personen hält einen sehr charakteristischen Gegenstand, ein Attribut in der Hand - Plüschtiere, Tierpräparate, einen Totenschädel - mit dem er eine untrennbare Verbindung eingeht.

Kontrastreich, präzise in der Formensprache und mit ausdrucksstarkem Gestus artikulieren diese unverwechselbaren Arbeiten auf zeitgenössische Weise Erhabenheit und Schönheit. In der Doppeldeutigkeit des Titels Pinakothek, der sowohl eine Bildersammlung in konkreten Ausstellungsräumen als auch die Bildersammlung im Sinne eines künstlerischen Fundus oder Atlas von "Bildern" (Abbildungen, Symbole, Darstellungen) assoziieren lässt, tritt ein zentrales Motiv der Herangehensweise von Timpner zutage: die Fasziniertheit von der Verschachtelung komplexer Bildwelten und das Spiel mit ihren vielschichtigen Bezügen.

Das Resultat seiner künstlerischen Arbeit wirkt dabei nie in gesuchter Weise konstruiert, sondern wird mit Sensibilität und großer Sicherheit als energischer Wurf umgesetzt.
