Motion Pictures. The artist creates immaculately produced oil paintings on aluminium. Repeating a cinematic widescreen format in the dimensions of her work she alludes immediately to the source of her images. By appropriating from film she inhabits a primarily visual territory, and is indeed drawn repeatedly to films that are visually rich such as 'In the Mood for Love', 'A Matter of Life & Death' and 'Paris, Texas'.

CLAPHAM ART GALLERY is pleased to present KATHRYN LANG with her debut one-person show. Lang graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting from Wimbledon School of Art in 2001, since when she has achieved great success at art fairs in London, Europe and New York as well as being featured in reviews in publications such as The Observer and ArtNexus.
Lang creates immaculately produced oil paintings on aluminium. Repeating a cinematic widescreen format in the dimensions of her work she alludes immediately to the source of her images. By appropriating from film Lang inhabits a primarily visual territory, and is indeed drawn repeatedly to films that are visually rich such as ‘In the Mood for Love’, ‘A Matter of Life & Death’ and ‘Paris, Texas’. As the artist states:
‘Films are chosen for their visual style, either from the mainstream or the more obscure, where the characters, composition and use of light are fundamental. Stills are taken that then go through a process of manipulation to highlight their digital origin. This is then transferred to oil paint on aluminium to reconstruct the image via a complex linear form. At this stage the work encounters further levels of distortion, resulting in an optically contorted surface. On a grand scale each overwhelms the viewer's field of vision.’
Through her interpretative processes into paint Lang magnifies the sensuality of the images that she has chosen to represent by enriching colour pitches and reducing formal detail. A fleeting instant is caught in time and removed from its narrative context, emphasising a moment that might otherwise be overlooked and is now given additional significance.
