The exhibition
will consist of a selection of Steiner’s 16mm films and a one-hour video looped
program of his recent video work, along with his paintings and drawings. The
program is being sponsored by: Kulture Land Oberosterreich and the Austrian
Consulate of Chicago. (http://www.ThomasSteiner.com). In the open-air courtyard of
studio 207, video projected work of Mark Siska from Euro Underground/Studio 207
and Melinda Fries from Ausgang.com will be featured on a continuous loop.
Thomas Steiner: “Since 1986 my work has dealt with abstract painting and
optical
printing of abstract drawings and painting on film images,†Steiner explained.
“The result is a process at the edge of static and moving images. I construct
drawings blind to work as spontaneous as possible, this spontaneity I aspire
and transfer into my films and videos. Along with animated film techniques and
optical printing I also utilize multiple exposure creating organic layers of
drawn photographed images that play and orchestrate themselves with the moving
image."
Mark Siska: Screen test and other Fragments. Video Loops.
Mark Siska will be showing Screen Test and Other Fragments that have evolved
into short looped pieces. Screen Test of a Clown: Featuring Chicago’s own Anti
Clown Fisto the Clown: Maintain: Features a production dinner disagreement, the
words and sounds are replaced with a sound-scape (Shot in Kiev Ukraine). Town
and Country: is long shot of a body in the park, (Shot in Kiev Ukraine). The
Class Room: Fragmented shots of an Alternative School in Chicago set to an
opera score.
Melinda Fries: Walking The Perimeter #1, the first in a series of explorations
of Chicago’s industrial corridors. (www.ausgang.com) “The Kinzie Industrial
Corridor is one of my favorite walking spots in Chicago. It consists of 675
acres and is home to 500 or 600 businesses and 15,000-17,000 jobs - depending
on who you ask. It might withstand gentrification for a while - there are
several programs in place to help small businesses located there and
restrictions on changing the zoning. It's particularly beautiful at nightâ€.
