In Place and Out of Place
"Dear Yvon,
I am very excited about making the show in May and having the opportunity to use the entire space. The film piece, we spoke about with Daniel Buren may be titled Remembering (in situ).
The idea is very simple, I film Daniel as he tries to remember what it felt like having his work censored and removed from the Sixth Guggenheim International in 1971.
Is it possible to film someone's recollection without a flash back? Judd, Flavin and Heizer ganged up on the weak Curators to have Buren's piece removed (or this is what art historians tell us). Photo documentation shows the work installed in the museum, but the piece was removed before the show opened.
Will his expression convey his feelings?
Monsieur Buren will be filmed remembering in various places in and around the Guggenheim Museum... he will not speak, we, the viewer, will only be able to imagine what his thoughts are.
My mother always said that time is a good healer.
The films will be shot on Super 8 and transferred to 16 mm for the exhibition. My plan is to shoot 6 rolls of super 8 (each 3 mins)
For the show I will make three different short edits of 9 minutes, these will be projected onto white canvas hanging from the ceiling of the main space, somehow mimicking Buren s original installation in New York.
There will be nothing else in the space, at least this is what I think at the moment... things can change.
Until then jm".
